Faux Brick Wall Project, Plus an Update

I find myself,.. not in the studio of late. We have  so many projects going on (including a few in the studio itself) at the moment, and I’m consumed by them!  I’m not sure if it works this way for other artists, but for myself all of my creative processes become totally focused on projects or a painting, it all depends on what’s going on at the time. Sooooo…. I thought I’d share this latest project that’s actually finished and I’m very happy with it.

It all started with this wall and I got an idea….. I already had the doors, but beams would be cool and look! There were some beams just hanging out in our new back yard for no apparent reason, so of course I gave them a purpose!

But I had bigger plans for this wall, which is why it didn’t get painted. First….I love interior brick walls…. I studied pinterest for faux brick walls. I have no patience for building the real thing and as you already know, I’m really into doing things on a small budget. Home depot carries these faux brick panels, they’re the same size as any other paneling. 4’x8′. Oh, and they’re around $25 each. I needed 2 panels.

Which happened to fit almost perfectly into the space.

My sweet hubby helped me tack these up, on each side of the bed. Then, I wasn’t happy with just leaving the paneling the way they were. Not surprising, I know! I gave them a light white wash. I still haven’t decided if I’ll do a second white wash to them yet. I’m going to wait a while to see how I feel about it. Once these panels were up, it left a small gap on the sides which I was fine with, because there were still two rafters just sitting around the back yard waiting their turn to be put up. I hired a friend of mine who does small handyman jobs and she helped me install them.

I had planned on building shelves over the brick, but I found some shelves at walmart, which after we cut them down, fit perfectly into the space.

I’m in love with the space. The room isn’t quite finished. I might add something to the wall on the right side of the bed, but I’m going to wait awhile and see how we live with it  first.  I plan on painting the ceiling. I’m thinking of adding fluorescent paint on the gray in the ceiling to make it look like stars, but we’ll see when I get to that project.

So after looking at the pictures and living with it for a bit, I did go ahead and add a piece to balance this. I took our clock from the living room and it fit perfectly.  Here’s the updated look.

Another angle

It turned out even better than what I had planned! The splurge in this room were the shelves, but they were a deal compared to building the shelves myself. I ended up getting a few more of these for our living room. I’ll share that project later, but if you were to get these shelves, I highly recommend buying them online thru walmart, because they will ship them for you for free and you don’t have to try to haul them yourself from the store. They are very heavy.  Everything else were minor costs. Sleep happy everyone!
